Pattern Collection: Knöpp i Håret

Pattern Collection
This pattern collection was created for my vector illustration course. I was tasked to create a pattern that represented a unique theme. My theme, springtime in Sweden, is demonstrated through traditional elements featured in Swedish spring festivities. The goal was to create a unified collection that would pair well together for application on various textiles and houseware items. I challenged myself to focus on creating simple shapes and rely on the principle of proximity and elements of size and color to create three distinct patterns that would integrate well together while also showcasing a clear hierarchy.
These initial sketches are from my brainstorm of potential elements I could include in my patterns. After experimentation, I chose three of these elements that I found paired well together throughout a pattern collection. The dalahäst and majbomman stayed fairly true to my sketch, but I adjusted the vitsippor. After the adjustments, the vitsippor better resembles the actual flower, adding more contrast between the shape of the two flowers in my hero and secondary pattern designs.
For my pattern collection, I worked to create a color palette that would function well across multiple elements. I used colors found in traditional Swedish weaving designs for inspiration, keeping the strong red, green, and yellow often seen throughout Swedish design work.
This mockup shows the patterns in use in a bedding set. The close proximity demonstrates the pattern as a collection while allowing room for each pattern to have the space to stand alone.
